US wine app Drync has launched a new feature that allows customers to buy online and have their wine shipped to a local wine retailer for pickup - a move it claims turns local shops into the world's largest wine store.
The new feature will turn local wine shops into a network, Drync claims, making up the world's largest wine store and offering 30,000 wines for delivery or local pick up.
Brad Rosen, Drync's chief executive, said: "We know the ability to pick up wine in store is a game-changer. Buy online, pick-up in store is a trend that has been very successful for big retailers. With Infinite Shelf, Drync is the first mobile app to offer this model to wine consumers, making it easier for them to get their favourite wine while enabling retailers to expand foot traffic."
Drync conducted a national survey in the US last month and found wine buyers were three times more likely to buy wine online in the next 12 months if in-store pickup is an option.
By shipping to a local retailer rather than to their house, consumers can potentially save time and money as well as browse for other wines. Infinite Shelf buyers are offered free shipping and receive their wines within days and can pick up the wines when and where it is convenient.
The Drync app allows people to buy nearly any wine buy taking a picture of the label and using image recognition technology and a database of over three million labels to find and purchase the wine.
The in-store pick up feature will launch in early 2015 in the US to start.
The Drync app was the brainchild of co-founders Brad Rosen and Jodi Goldstein, both tech entrepreneurs, who partnered with engineers Bill Kirtley and Rob Mathews. All were passionate about wine and saw the potential of smart phone technology to shake up the wine industry.
