Stanley Gibbons buys Bid For Wine online auction platform

Published:  20 July, 2015

Stamp and antique dealer Stanley Gibbons Group has bought the online fine wine auction platform Bid For Wine.

The publicly-quoted Gibbons group includes its original world-famous stamp business, coins and medals division Baldwin's, Mayfair and Manhattan antique dealer Mallett and the auctioneer Dreweatts & Bloomsbury.

Stephan Ludwig, managing director of Stanley Gibbons' interiors and antiques division, told harpers.co.uk: "Bid For wine was formed in 2008 and we've been using it for the last two-and-half years to run our wine business, both physical sales and simultaneous online auctions. Essentially what we're doing now is taking that service completely in-house."

Bid For Wine was founded by Lionel Nierop, a former management consultant and member of the Cambridge University blind wine tasting team, and barrister Spenser Hilliard.
