Matthew Clark beefs up premium Italian and Spanish wine ranges as top-end sales surge

Published:  02 October, 2015

Matthew Clark has added 35 premium wines from Italy and Spain to its portfolio in response to a surge in demand from the top-end on-trade.

The wines are among 40 new additions for the wholesaler six months ahead of the publication of its annual list in the spring.

Matthew Clark said the move was in response to double digit growth in premium wines form its range.

Additions from Spain include Casa Rojo - whose wines include Macho Man Monastrell from Jumilla, recently named in Wines From Spain's Top 100 Wines for 2015 - and Losada, which produces smoky reds from the Mencía grape.

Sólo Bobal, from the organic producer Bodegas Aranleón based in Utiel-Requena, is also among the additions.

Matthew Clark said a 45% increase in sparkling wine sales had led to the introduction of a new Cava from Villa Conchi.

New wine and producers from Italy include Tuscany's Castello Vicchiomaggio, Borgo del Tiglio from Collio, and Torre dei Beati, based in Loreto Aprutino.

Purchasing director Simon Jerrome said "We have worked very hard to ensure we've found the best wines in both quality and value for our ever growing premium customer base.

"I have been encouraged by the support that we have seen from these producers in this project which clearly demonstrates recognition of the growth we have seem in premium wine sales in the on-trade."

Matthew Clark is in the process of being bought by Bargain Booze owner Conviviality Retail.
