Online retailer and bidding platform eBay has launched a wine specific site in the US called eBay Wine.
The site is launching in partnership with Drync, which is a mobile wine application that helps to recommend wines as well as having an option for consumers to buy wines they are drinking.
The site launched with over 11,000 wines and offers wines from all corners of the globe. The online retailer plans to double the number of wines over the next three months.
While eBay has been selling wines for years on its site, it did not have a section that made searching for wines user friendly. It was often just long list that were bucketed in red, white or sparkling. The site now features easily searchable areas that are consumer friendly and intuitive.
There are additional filters that can help cut down on the number of results presented including country of origin, grape variety, vintage and an option to put in sepcific price points and ranges. The wines range from rare and collectibles as well as everyday drinking wines. There is a section that offers wines that are up for auction too.
All the sellers will be vetted by eBay however customers will have to verify if the a seller is able to ship to their state. With the three-tiered distribution system in the US shipping alcohol across state lines can be a challenge.
The Drync app which allows for users to take picture of wine and sue photo recognition technology to recognise the label, find it and purchase it. The wine can then be shipped to local merchant for pick up. Partners that use the app are being encouraged to integrate with eBay and Drync is helping to support that process.
There are over 300 million searches on eBay everyday.
