Concha y Toro's Fetzer winery in Mendocino, California has launched a red and a white blend into Tesco. The red blend is called Crimson and the white is called Quartz.
Fetzer asked winemaker Dennis Martin to come up with something "brazenly Californian". Crimson is a blend of California Syrah, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah, while
Quartz is a blend of 35% Chardonnay, 23% Riesling, 18% Gewürztraminer, 14% Pinot Grigio and 7% Muscat.
This is the first major product launch from Fetzer since Concha y Toro took over the winery in 2011.
John McLaren, UK director of the Wine Institute of California, said: "Blends are part of the fabric of the California way of winemaking, and can often be a better way of expressing local terroir than through the monochrome of single varietals. I doubt that the exuberance of these two wines could have been captured in any other way."
Jim Elliot, sales director at Concha y Toro UK, said: "As soon as we saw the designs and tasted the wine, we knew we had something special with Crimson and Quartz - artisanal wines showing how fruit from coastal regions can really shine - in a uniquely Californian style."
Fetzer Quartz and Crimson retail at £9.99 on shelf now in Tesco stores nationwide.
