Amazon Prime Now rolling out one-hour restaurant food delivery service in selected US cities
Amazon announced it is rolling out one-hour restaurant food delivery service for its Amazon Prime customers in San Francisco, following a successful trial in Seattle last year.
Prime Now first trialled the service in Seattle, Washington in September 2015. It is now available in San Diego, Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles, Baltimore, Austin and Portland.
The service will only be available to Prime members and they will need to use the Prime Now app. There will be no additional delivery fees or marks up for the service, besides the yearly subscription fee of being a Prime member.
The app which brought one-hour delivery service to London, is currently trialling food delivery service in San Francisco with 117 local restaurants. It will be rolled-out across 33 postal codes.
Harpers.co.uk tried the one-hour delivery service ordering wine from Amazon Prime Now and received the first order in 28 minutes. For retailers on the high street the expectations of one-hour delivery service could prove to be a challenge.
The service if brought to the UK would be in direct competition with other food delivery services like Just Eat, Hungry House and Deliveroo food delivery. UBEReats may also be entering the market in the not so distant future.
Such service however are not all bad news for the on-trade. It opens up the market to sell to customers who otherwise would not want to leave the comfort of their own home. Many of the service charge the food at the same price as if a customer was dining in.
Some wine merchants have taken advantage of such services as way of selling more wines and increasing their customer base. Vagabond Wines Spitalfield is currently available through the Deliveroo delivery service and offers 19 wines for delivery with an average delivery time of 32 minutes.
Amazon also is trialling a sommelier phoneline service in Japan to help customers select wines to order.
