Tavistock uses Poetic Licence to launch small-batch spirits range

Published:  18 September, 2015

A new small batch distillery will be making its first public appearance with its products at next week's Boutique Bar Show in London.

Poetic Licence has been set up in a bar of the same name in the Roker Hotel in Sunderland owned by Tavistock Hospitality.

It is launching Northern Dry Gin at 43.2% abv, Old Tom Gin at 41.6% and Graceful vodka at 40.4%, with batch production limited to 400 bottles at a time.

All will be available in 70cl and 20cl bottles, and there will be a three-pack containing one of each of the smaller bottles.

Poetic License is the brainchild of Tavistock managing director and craft drinks enthusiast Mark Hird, who said: "We developed our gins with the idea of offering something very different to mainstream brands, so they'd really pack a punch in terms of flavour.

"Being in the trade, we were also keen to make sure they worked for bartenders and mixed well in classic cocktails such as a Negroni, whilst still standing out in their own right."

"[The name] Poetic License all stems from the want to do things differently.

"Being independent, we have the freedom to deviate from conventional rules and find a tastier way, often resulting in something a bit weird and a bit wonderful, but that's the joy of it."

The distillery will deliver direct to businesses within the north east of England and aims to set up national distribution.

Sales to consumers are being made through an online shop.

Tavistock's other businesses include the Sonnet 43 microbrewery in Coxhoe, County Durham.
