Nielsen: Alcohol sales boom off the back of hot weather

Published:  23 August, 2016

Brits are celebrating the summer weather and alcohol sales have soared over the last four weeks according Nielsen most recent data out today.

Overall beer and ciders, Champagne and apparelling wines were the bigger winners over the four week period ending on 13 August 2016.

Beer and cider volumes rose 4.7% and value jumped 6.9% compared to the same time period last year.  That equates to more than 15 million more pints sold and £27m.

Jon Sheppard, a client business partner at Nielsen, said that has helped Lager bounce back as helped turn the recent slide in cider consumption around. He said: "This is also helping to recover some of the Cider declines we've seen of late with the yearly level of volume drop halved due to just these 4 weeks."

Specifically cider brewers were the biggest winners and saw volume rise by 6.2% and value rise by 8.4%. Lager saw volume rise 4.3%, just ahead of Ale which saw volumes lift 4.2%.

Sparkling wine saw a double-digit climb with value up 13.9%.  Champagne grew at a faster rate in the four week period outpacing the 52 week average and was up 4.9%.

"With the recent good spell of weather set to continue into next weekend, consumer confidence flat and the country's mood boosted by Team GB's success in Rio: the summer certainly isn't over and these sales could rise even further. This would be a welcome boost, after an early summer tainted by a rainy June and England's early departure from Euro 2016," said Sheppard.
