Glenfiddich delves into the archives to remake its original single malt

Glenfiddich is to launch a modern re-creation of the original whisky that it produced to kick-start the single malt whisky market in 1963.

Malt Master Brian Kinsman has based the whisky on the recipe and a sample of the first Glenfiddich "straight malt" made by Sandy and Charles Grant Gordon of family-owned William Grant which still owns the brand today.

Their whisky helped to transform the global market for Scotch which had previously been a blend-only affair.

The 21^st century update is being bottled under the name The Original will make its debut at this weekend's Goodwood Revival motor sport festival in Sussex.

It will then go on sale in whisky specialist off- and on-trade accounts with an rrp of £80 per bottle.

Kinsman said: "Glenfiddich has an unrivalled collection of rare and aged single malts from which we can draw on to create innovative whiskies.

"Using this collection we were able to replicate the original Glenfiddich Straight Malt. Glenfiddich The Original is a true taste of history."

The launch will coincide with the showing of a brand film in independent cinemas, telling the story of how the 1963 malt was taken to the US.
