UK restaurants to offer deals via Facebook

UK restaurants, bars and shops willl now be able to showcase special offers through Facebook Deals, a new mobile phone discounting system.

Facebook Deals, which launches in the UK today, will reward customers who regularly "check in" on their phones to restaurants and shops, through Facebook Places.

Firms who have already signed up include YO! Sushi and Starbucks, who are offering a free filter coffee to those who check in today.

"We all love a bargain so whether you're on the lookout for a special offer at your favourite restaurant or tips from a fashionista friend about a discount on shoes in a department store, Facebook Deals will help you find it," said Joanna Shields, Facebook's EMEA vice president.
"Over 200 million people use Facebook on their mobile phone. We are now offering businesses the oppurtunity to connect with people in an entirely new way," she added.

YO! Sushi is giving away 2,000 meals to the value of £60,000. The first 1,000 diners to check-in with their mobile phone with Facebook Places at any of its 47 participating restaurants, tag their friend and show a member of staff their phone screen with the confirmation message receive complimentary food and drink.

Robin Rowland, chief executive at YO! Sushi said: "We are always keen to work with like-minded brands, so being the only restaurant involved in the launch of Facebook Places in the UK is a real endorsement of the YO! Sushi brand. Our customers are the most technologically savvy in our sector so this deal will really turn them on. Plus, the opportunity to potentially reach over 26 million active Facebook users in the UK is unbelievably exciting."
