Bordeaux producers have played down reports that they will open a dedicated bar in London some time this year.

The region's generic body, the Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux, is considering opening Bordeaux bars in London, Shanghai, Hong Kong, New York and Berlin in association with local businesses.

The CIVB, which is facing a rebellion among small producers who claim it is not representing their interests and countering plummenting prices, wants to convey a confident and upmarket image in key export markets.

A CIVB statement said: "The Bordeaux Bars is a concept that was talked about in the Plan Bordeaux Demain [a strategy document issued last year].

"This concept is just a project for now: creating places in different countries where Bordeaux will be served and tasted in an educational way. But it is just at the conceptual stage at the moment, so we don't have more information on it."
