Diageo has backed a proposal in the US state of Michigan to ban adults from driving if they are found to have bought alcohol on behalf of anyone under the legal drinking age.

The proposed law has been put forward by Democratic state representative Harold L Haugh. The move would make selling or furnishing alcohol to a minor a misdemeanour in state law which could lead to the guilty party's driving licence being revoked for up to 180 days.

The penalty could also include a $1,000 fine and up to 60 days in prison for the first offence.

Subsequent offences are punishable by a $2,500 fine and up to 90 days in prison.

Joshua Sanders, senior director of state government relations for Diageo North America, said: "Diageo has a zero tolerance policy towards under-age drinking and we believe that this legislation targeting adults, who are the number one source of alcohol to kids, will help Michigan make significant progress in this area."
