AOC Chaume is abolished

Published:  08 June, 2009

AOC Chaume has been abolished by the French authorities.

The tiny appellation, covering 70ha on the right bank of the Layon river in Anjou, was created in 2003 as a Premier Cru and revoked in 2005 following local opposition. Since then it has been known simply as AOC Chaume.

The Conseil d'Etat has now upheld the view from the AOC Quarts de Chaume syndicate, which argues that only Quarts de Chaume wines should be claimed as part of the Chaume area.

Some 1,500hl of AOC Chaume wines are produced each year, produced from hand-picked Chenin Blanc. The area's mesoclimate is suitable for noble rot, producing sweet wines which can age for 10 or more years.
