Record numbers sit WSET diploma

"People are fascinated by wine" claims Janet Bangs

The Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) states that record numbers of examination candidates registered to sit its diploma exam in June. The 2000 diploma exam took place in 20 venues this year, 11 of these overseas with new centres in Tokyo and Boston. "People are fascinated by wine," said chief examiner, Janet Bangs. "We have had incredible interest in our website from all corners of the globe. It seems there is limited scope outside the UK for people wanting to extend their wine knowledge other than on specialist courses offered by the likes of Roseworthy, Geisenheim and UC Davis." "Overseas candidates in particular see the value of the WSET Diploma exam as the appropriate springboard to the Master of Wine qualification," said Bangs. Of the 26 candidates who got the diploma with honours, two came from Ireland, two from Austria and one each from Canada and Hong Kong.
