Norway may increase alcohol tax

Published:  23 July, 2008

A government committee in Norway has proposed increasing the tax on alcohol by 10%.

The Surtax committee has also discussed scrapping tax-free alcohol at airports and on ferries to the continent.

The proposals, to be presented to Parliament today, have already been heavily criticised by the brewery industry.

Lars Midtgaard, the CEO of Hansa Borg Breweries, said a tax increase would lead to increased cross-border trade and the death of Norway's brewery industry.
