Tesco to go green

Published:  23 July, 2008

Supermarket giant Tesco has claimed the wine trade "needed a fundamental change in thinking" as it announced major plans to reduce its carbon emissions.

It is understood the money is also being used to experiment with Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) wine bottles that will help the supermarket meet its target of reducing the weight of packaging by 25% by 2010.

"We are launching new wine products in August in different packaging formats," Gale told Harpers.

"Packaging will include PET, pouches and tetra-paks to see which one the consumer likes. But no decision has been made as to which format we will go with."

By 2008 all Tesco own-label products will be labelled with "recyclability" information - whether it can be re-used, recycled, composted or not at all. All suppliers - including wine producers - will then be expected to comply with these measures.
