Shame the spongers

Published:  18 January, 2007

You can always trust good old reliable Gluck to hit the nail straight on the head. His excellent article (Return of the sponger', Harpers, 23 June) highlights a parasite that should be eradicated as soon as possible.

The problem is that far too many PR people like to look like they are doing their job, and the more bodies - however vile - they have in the tasting room or around the luncheon table, the happier they are.

We all know who these so-called Masters of Lunch are; the indomitable Pamela Vandyke Price even gave them all extremely suitable names. With today's digital cameras, we could build up a gallery of these rogues and send copies to all tasting organisers. In a few weeks, the spongers would know that as far as the wine trade is concerned, their number is well and truly up, and they will have to start attending publishers' parties instead!
