Belle of the Ball

Published:  18 January, 2007

Plaimont, the cooperative based in south-west France, is relaunching Colombelle, one of its oldest wine brands, in the UK.

The brand was first conceived in 1973 when sales of Armagnac, the main source of income for the region, began to fall. At the time, most of the region's Colombard was used to produce the spirit, but after tasting a Californian varietal, says the company, the Plaimont winemakers realised its potential and launched the Colombelle brand.

The 2005 vintage is 80% Colombard, with Ugni Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Listan and Chardonnay making up the rest of the blend. With an RRP of 4.99, Colombelle is available at Oddbins, Les Caves de Pyrne, Mill Hill Wines and Grape Ideas. A red and a ros will follow later in the year.
