World's oldest Port house launches into second major high street retailer

Published:  25 November, 2016

Historic Port brand, Kopke, is currently launching its Reserve Tawny Port into Waitrose - the second time the brand has been listed in a major national retailer in the UK, following the launch of its 1996 Colheita (an aged Tawny Port made with grapes from a single vintage) in M&S in September.

Tania Branco Oliveira, PR and communications director for Sogevinus, discussed plans to push into the UK off-trade: "After many years working with the UK wine trade to raise awareness of this brand, we are really pleased to see Kopke listed with two major national retailers.

"Sogevinus is the leader in the production of Tawny Ports, a category which is now grabbing the attention of buyers in the UK. We are proud to see this historic Portuguese brand available at Waitrose, a leading British retailer, just in time for Christmas."

Although Tawny Ports only accounts for 5% of the UK market, tawny is the fastest growing Port category in the UK.

Compeitors Sandeman recently re-released its range of 10, 20, 30 and 40 year-old Tawnies for launch into the UK market place where they have seen sales of the Tawny style rise by 30% so far this year compared to 2015.

Founded in 1638, Kopke is the world's oldest Port wine house and is part of Sogevinus.

Kopke Reserve Tawny is a blended aged Tawny Port made from 25% Tinta Roriz, 20% Tinta Barroca, 25% Tinto Cão, and 30% Touriga Franca.

It is aged for a minimum of seven years in barrel in the cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, near the Atlantic Ocean.

Sogevinus also owns premium Port brands Cálem, Barros and Burmester, and specialise in Tawny Ports.
