We're not sure if we should be referring to a Master of Wine as a "chief" but either way congratulations to Laura Jewell who this week has been named as the new UK and Europe, well, chief for Wine Australia.

We're not sure if we should be referring to a Master of Wine as a "chief" but either way congratulations to Laura Jewell who this week has been named as the new UK and Europe, well, chief for Wine Australia.

Jewell is to give up her respected role as head of wine development at Tesco to take up the new role from February next year. In her four years at the UK's number one retailer, Jewell has truly made her mark and been responsible for developing and introducing many new lines not only to the main Tesco wine offer, but in developing the Finest wine range in particular.

Her Tesco appointment marked a return to the front line of the UK wine trade after an equally successful time turning round the wine and drinks department at convenience chain group Spar. She was widely recognised during her time at Spar of raising standards and professionalism in wine retailing within the group, but across the impulse, convenience and independent retail sectors.

Jewell, though, will be taking on another tough task at Wine Australia following in the great work of the late Yvonne May who lost her battle with cancer earlier in the year.

But with Jewell at the helm the Australian wine industry will be assured of a highly professional, innovative and equally well-liked and respected leader to lead its cause in the vital UK wine market.

So congratulations to our Chief of the Week Laura Jewell MW.
