WSTA blames duty escalator for fourth highest alcohol prices in UK

Published:  25 June, 2013

The Wine and Spirit Trade Association has said the duty escalator is the biggest factor contributing to UK consumers paying 43% more for alcohol than other EU countries, the fourth highest prices for alcohol in the EU.

Miles Beale, chief executive of the WSTA was responding to figures released by the Eurostat and ONS. "Tax now accounts for 57% of the cost of a bottle of wine and 79% of a bottle of vodka; the government needs to urgently reconsider its unpopular wine and spirits duty escalator," he said.

Despite the UK's high duty rates, Sweden, Finland and Ireland are currently paying even higher alcohol duties according to the report.
