The East of England Co-operative has opened Le Château, a new concept store for wines, beers and spirits, which it hopes will be the first of a few, due to the current gap in the market.

The East of England Co-operative has opened Le Château, a new concept store for wines, beers and spirits, which it hopes will be the first of a few, due to the current gap in the market.

Based in Norwich, the aim is to offer the high quality service of a traditional wine merchant, while also providing complementary deli and locally sourced products.

The store has a wide range of wines, beers and spirits from around the world, specially tailored to suit all budgets, as well as Fairtrade wines.

Roger Grosvenor, group general manager trading, said: "We researched the market and it is there is a definite gap for a wine merchant, especially after the demise of the high street chains, there is only really Majestic here now, so we hope it may be the first of a few.

"We are just waiting to see what the footfall is, but it has been very encouraging in the first week.

"Le Château is an entirely new concept store for us, but we have very experienced colleagues on board to ensure we provide an excellent service to our customers."

"We will be hosting regular wine tastings throughout the year and events to provide customers with the opportunity to meet some of the growers involved and learn about their specialities."

The Society is working with Paul Allen, fine wine merchant and consultant, to ensure that Le Château offers the best possible range of products to customers.

The East of England Co-operative Society is the largest independent retailer in East Anglia and has over 200 trading outlets which are located in over 70 towns and villages including the three regional centres of Norwich, Ipswich and Colchester.
