Former United Nations secretary-general, Kofi Annan, will be the keynote speaker at the third Climate Change and Wine Congress to be held in Marbella on Apri 13-14.

Annan will look at ways businesses can take the lead in addressing climate change issues as part of his presentation to the conference, which again is organised by the Wine Academy of Spain and coordinated by its president, Pancho Campo MW.

It is hoped the Marbella conference will build on the last event which attracted 350 people from over 40 countries.

It will include practical case studies from wineries and wine companies on how they are tackling climate change. It will also feature dedicated sessions looking at the impact of climate change in areas such as viniculture, oenology, sparkling wine, packaging, logistics and closures, and energy conservation. It will also look at the use of organic/biodynamic vine growing as measures for adapting to climate change.

The conference is aimed at viniculturalists, producers, wineries, the media and wine investors. It hopes to give guidance and business models for the wider wine industry.

Speakers include biodynamic expert and author Nicolas Joly, soil scientist Claude Bourguignon, winemaker Carlos Falcó of Spain's Marques de Griñón, Master of Wine Susan McCraith, and climatologist Greg Jones of the University of Southern Oregon.

Harpers Wine & Spirit editor, Richard Siddle, will be speaking and taking part in a session looking at the role of the media in reporting climate change.
