The Portman Group seeks new members for Independent Complaints Panel

Published:  10 January, 2011

The Portman Group is advertising for new members to join its Independent Complaints Panel.

One of the current vacancies is for someone with drinks industry experience and the other for someone ideally from a marketing or advertising background.

It is the first time that vacancies have been publicly advertised by the independent body which considers complaints about alcohol marketing under the Portman Group's Code.

Previously appointments have always been made by the panel's chairman, with members come from diverse backgrounds.

Sir Richard Tilt, chairman of the Independent Complaints Panel said: "The Panel performs a vitally important role in ensuring the strict standards for alcohol marketing in the UK are upheld. I am seeking applications from people with expertise, objectivity and sound judgement."

David Poley, chief executive of the Portman Group which provides the secretariat function for the Panel, said: "The Independent Complaints Panel is the 'jury' in our system and has a proven record of rational, consistent decision-making. While the appointments process has worked very well until now, I believe that advertising the vacancies is in line with the principles of openness and transparency to which we aspire in our administration of the Code."

Details of the vacancies and an information pack for candidates are available to download from the Portman Group's website http://www.portmangroup.org.uk/?pid=1&level=1
