Asda slammed for selling beer that's cheaper than water

Asda has come under fire for selling cans of lager that are cheaper than the price of a bottle of water.

Asda has come under fire for selling cans of lager that are cheaper than the price of a bottle of water.

The supermarket giant is selling four packs of 440ml Skol lager for 90p, which works out at 51p a litre.

The deal on the cans makes it cheaper to buy than bottles water. A four pack of 750ml bottles of Evian water costs £2.91, which works out at 97p a litre.

Alcohol Concern has criticised the deal, saying that the low price will encourage young people and heavy drinkers to binge drink.

In a statement, Asda said: "We believe that all our customers deserve value across the whole of the store whether it's on lager, a loaf of bread or a litre of petrol.

"We take our role as a responsible retailer very seriously; we have already banned the sale of alcohol in our town centre stores overnight, have stopped selling certain alcopops and shooters that appeal to young people and have doubled the number of test purchases carried out in our stores.

"As we've said in the past, we believe a ban on promotions and the introduction of minimum pricing will simply create incentives for black markets."
