Fine Gael calls for total ban on drinks advertising

Published:  23 July, 2008

The United Ireland party, Fine Gael wants a ban on drinks advertising because it is worsening alcohol problems, and is costing the country nearly 3billion a year.

Fine Gael health spokesman said: "It is my view that a total ban on drinks advertising and promotion would help in turning the tide towards responsible drinking and relieving the constant burden that is being placed on our health services.

"It has been shown that when strong action is taken to tackle our attitude to drink, behaviour does change.

"A wholesale attitude change to drinking in Ireland is necessary and I strongly believe that banning alcohol advertising should form a part of this," he said.
