A 2006 Riesling QBA by Fritz Haag pouring by the glass at The Witchery. It was given to me by my friend and mentor, Glen Montgomery. I had taken the job there as I was working on the phones at the time at Scottish Gas to fund a band. But then the department was closed. One day he gave me a wee splash of this Riesling. I smelt it and it was transportative. It took me to a particular place in my hometown of Linlithgow. There’s an old oak tree wrapped in Russian vines which smelt a lot like honeysuckle – the wine smelt exactly like that tree. Notes of pretty flowers, even a leafy green element. For a second, I was back at that tree. I thought ‘how the hell? Why does this wine smell like a memory?’. I have just been down that rabbit hole ever since.
