Friarwood adds wines from Carlos Moro’s La Rioja project

Published:  15 August, 2018

Friarwood Fine Wines has announced it is expanding its Spanish portfolio with an exclusive selection from winemaker Carlos Moro.

Carlos Moro’s eponymous label was established in 2015 as a personal project to create the best possible wine in iconic Spanish appellations Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Cigales and Rueda.

Friarwood will be stocking the Rioja Crianza CM 2015 and Rioja Prestigio CM 2015 as well as single vineyard wines Ribera del Duero DO Rento 2014, Rueda DO Finca Las Marcas 2015 and Cigales DO Finca Valdehierro 2014.

“Due to their talented wine makers and diverse terroir, we were very keen to expand our portfolio with Spanish wines,” said Auriane d’Aramon, head buyer and one half of the husband and wife team behind Friarwood.

“Their wines are well structured with great complexity. Considering Spain is typically associated with reds, the Finca Las Marcas is a very interesting white wine and its richness makes it a great contender to a classic Chardonnay.”

Carlos Moro Family Wines’ La Rioja project has very limited production and the wines are produced from specific vineyards to create “truly unique Rioja wines”, the company said today.

Rento’s production, for example, is from single estate El Hito Corto and has only produced five vintages in its 15-year history.

Meanwhile, the Rueda and Cigales regions produce less than 11,000 bottles of the Finca Las Marcas and Finca Valdehierro.

The new additions follow a period of change at the merchant over the past few years.

Under new owners d’Aramon and Ben Carfagnini, last year’s Wimbledon store opening doubled the fine wine merchant’s retail space.

Carfagnini bought the business from the previous owner who passed away in 2015.

The new additions range from £28 for the Rioja Crianza CM 2015, to the £59.90 for the Rento 2014.
