Malbec pioneer Hervé J. Fabre brings varietal focus to the UK via Cahors

Published:  19 July, 2018

Hervé and Diane Joyaux Fabre, the driving force behind leading Argentinian bodega Viñalba, have secured their first UK listing since moving home to France last year.

Having clocked 36 years in Argentina, winemaker Hervé Joyaux Fabre travelled upstream to the home of the grape and purchased an estate in Cahors in southwest France – the original homeland of Malbec.

Over the past year, Fabre and his wife, export director Diane, have continued their focus on 100% Malbec wines at the estate at their Vignobles St Didier Parnac estate.

Two wines will now be distributed by independent merchant Roberson Wine in the UK, including Mission de Picpus 2016, a medal-winning entry at the 2018 IWC awards, of which Harpers was an award sponsor.

Diane Joyaux Fabre said: “We have had an excellent start to our first year with Les Vignobles St Didier Parnac, especially winning the Cahors trophy from the IWC. We are thrilled to be working with Roberson and honoured that they have seen the potential of our wines from Cahors.”

Hervé Joyaux Fabre was drawn back to France and Cahors by childhood friend Pierre Montmayou, who he also collaborated with on the founding of Bodega Fabre Montmayou in Argentina back in 1993.

Viñalba followed in 2007 and has since been a fixture on the awards circuit.

Originally from Bordeaux, the husband and wife team acquired Les Vignobles St Didier Parnac in 2017 from the Rigal family.

The estate is based on the banks of the river Lot near the town of Cahors and consists of three estates each of which grows Malbec.

The wines now available via Roberson hail from the Prieuré de Cénac estate situated around a historic priory, located on a limestone headland, 300 metres above sea level.
