Champagne leaves Prosecco in the dust as the New Year wine of choice

Published:  05 January, 2017

The unfailing success of Prosecco encountered a roadblock on New Years Eve as UK consumers ditched Italian fizz in favour of Champagne.

According to wine app Vivino, partygoers were looking to trade up on December 31.

Data from the app showed that seven of the UK's 10 most rated wines on New Year's Eve were Champagne and the other three were red, leaving Prosecco, Cava and white wine off the list completely.

Vivino, which has 22 million users globally, saw a surge in the number of Champagne reviews made by Brits on the app as midnight approached on December 31.

The celebrations started early, with 7pm being the time that the most number of consecutive scans and reviews took place.

Overall, the number of people scanning wine increased by 50% compared to New Year's Eve 2015.

The 10 top rated wines on New Year's Eve according to UK Vivino users were:

Moët & Chandon Champagne Impérial Bru

Campo Viejo Tempranillo Rioja

Bollinger Special Cuvée Brut Champagne

Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut (Carte Jaune)

Trivento Reserve Malbec

Lanson Black Label Champagne Brut

Château Musar Gaston Hochar

Taittinger Champagne Brut Réserve

Louis Roederer Champagne Brut Premier

Dom Pérignon Champagne Brut
