Accolade's Kumala backs Botham's South African charity walk

Published:  09 December, 2015

Leading South African wine brand Kumala is to be the official wine sponsor of Sir Ian Botham's upcoming eight-day charity walk across South Africa.

The walk, named Beefy Walking the Rainbow Nation, marks both Botham's 60th birthday and the 30th anniversary of his first charity walk from John O'Groats to Land's End in 1985, which raised over £1 million for research for into leukaemia and lymphoma.

It begins on December 10 at Llandudno beach on the Western Cape, and finishes in Pretoria on December 17.

The walk will raise money for a number of key South African charities, including Nazareth House, The Chipembere Rhino Foundation, the Kliptown Youth Program and The Waitrose Foundation Southern Africa.

Botham has raised over £13 million to date through his charitable work.

Paul Schaafsma, global chief executive of Accolade Wines, Kumala's parent company, said: "Kumala is delighted to be partnering with Beefy on his walk of the Rainbow Nation.

"The third day of the walk will be especially poignant for our Accolade Wines colleagues in Stellenbosh, because the journey begins at the Kayamandi Primary School.

The school has two brand new classrooms, which Kumala has helped to fund as part of Accolade Wines' ten-year education-support programme to the township."

As the walk progresses, Kumala will be holding wine tastings for walkers, sponsors and spectators alike.

A virtual wine tasting event will be run alongside the walk on December 9 using Kumala's Facebook page and the #KumalaWines hashtag.
