Mathias Camilleri named UK's Chaîne des Rôtisseurs Young Sommelier of the Year

Published:  23 March, 2015

Last week Mathias Camilleri from the Medlar was named UK's Chaîne des Rôtisseurs Young Sommelier of the Year.

Camilleri, the eighth winner of the title, will be competing for the global title in the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs International Finals, which will be held on September 25, 2015 in Adelaide, Australia.

Philip Evins, Bailli Délégué for the Chaîne des Rôtisseur said: "Every single year we witness such an inspiring performance from our young professionals, which is testament to the development opportunities that the hospitality industry offers to young people who show dedication to the sector.  It is a commitment the Chaîne is proud to help drive through initiatives like the Young Professionals Awards."

The competition is based on theory, service and a blind tasting that each sommelier must deliver and this year the competition was so tough judges selected four sommeliers for final consideration rather than the standard three.

"I would like to congratulate Mathias on his achievement - the winners of our competitions set a fantastic example for other ambitious young sommeliers by giving them something to aspire to.  It's a delight to be able to facilitate this and keep fresh, young talent within the sector," said Evins.

The Young Sommelier of the Year is held to encourage young professionals within the hospitality sector to aspire to the highest standards of service and knowledge. The competition is open to all sommeliers that are under the age of 30 and currently working in the UK. Additionally the sommelier was required to be sponsored by a member of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, candidates had to be nominated by their employer and had to complete an application form to enter.

The Chaîne des Rôtisseurs is an international gastronomic society which was founded in Paris in 1950.
