Government ministers to set out misuse strategies at Alcohol Concern conference

Alcohol Concern has lined up a strong panel of front bench MPs and ministers to speak at its annual conference next week which will be held under the theme "Taking back our health and high streets".

Alcohol Concern has lined up a strong panel of front bench MPs and ministers to speak at its annual conference next week which will be held under the theme "Taking back our health and high streets".

Lynne Featherstone MP, minister of state for crime prevention will join shadow health secretary, Andy Burnham MP as the conference looks to assess both the impact of alcohol abuse on both violent crime and the nation's health.

Featherstone will look at what local measures and initiatives set up by the government are doing to tackle to alcohol misuse, whilst Burnham will look at what steps a Labour government would take to tackle alcohol issues in the UK.  

Other key speakers lined up to appear at the conference in London on November 19 include: Professor Sir Ian Gilmore, president of Alcohol Concern; Sir Bruce Keogh, NHS England; Professor Gerard Hastings, University of Stirling; Professor Linda Bauld, University of Stirling. It will be chaired by journalist, author and Telegraph columnist, Allison Pearson.

The conference will look at what steps and measures are being taken around a number of what it sees are the main alcohol challenges facing the country. These include: the political outlook for alcohol issues; NHS and alcohol; advertising; alcohol and the armed forces; alcohol and older people; alcohol and Cancer; Community alcohol services; and working with treatment resistant clients.  

The conference is being billed as the flagship event of Alcohol Concern's Alcohol Awareness Week.
