David Cartwright remembers Mario Kempes, Gordon Banks and Bryan Robson

Published:  07 July, 2014

And then there were four...yes the Brazil World Cup is getting down to the serious stuff with only the semi-finals and final to go. But there is still time for members of the trade to share their World Cup Memories. David Cartwright of Seckford Agencies is the latest to take up the challenge.

If you would like to have a go then simply answer the following questions and email them to

Mario KempesMario KempesJust goes to show you can play amazing football in a field covered in ticker tape. Mario Kempes the star of the 1978 World Cup finals in Argentina.

Favourite World Cup and why?

Argentina 1978. So exotic, all that ticker tape and amazing theme tunes from both TV channels. Mario Kempes, the flowing hair, Ossie Ardiles, Holland and their beautiful football. It had it all...Oh, apart from England

Best World Cup game and why?

France v Croatia 1998, semi-final. Croatia were SO exciting and in Davor Suker had the player of the tournament (think I had an, ahem, little crush on him) and the entire team played with such joy and excitement. The fans, the fans!  Oh, and then Lillian Thuram decided to spoil the party by scoring TWICE in last few minutes.  Amazing game.

Archie Gemmill's wonder goal

Greatest World Cup goal

Has to be Archie Gemmill in 1978. After terrible first two games in the group no one gave the Scots any hope of beating the mighty Dutch team. Archie G literally danced around three defenders, twisting this way, that ace commentary and then he kept cool head to float it over the keeper. Awesome. Makes an appearance in the film Trainspotting to.

Favourite all time World Cup player

Johan Cruyff. What a player, and THAT turn. My boyhood footie hero. I willed them to overturn Germany in1974 Final. A certain Gerd Muller had other ideas.

Gordon Banks vs Pele

Earliest World Cup memory memory

1970 World Cup, Brazil v England. Such sportsmanship, THAT save and THAT cuddle between "our Bobby" and the maestro, Edson Arantes do Nascimento, oh, I mean Pele. Especially proud as the wonderful Gordon Banks played for my beloved Stoke City.

Best all time England World Cup player

Bryan Robson. Such heart and desire (note current England squad). The goal against France after 13 seconds in1982 sticks in the memory. Sadly injury prone and put paid to our progress.

Worst all time England World Cup player

Current squad. Not one of them showed any passion, desire or hunger. Not ONE. I would ask them am to watch USA and how they played  v Belgium or how Chile played v. Brazil or Algeria v Germany... I could go on....

Ideal wine / spirit to drink during World Cup final?

HAS to be Cachaca, Leblon.

Any personal "funny" World Cup moment?

Well, as a 15 year old boy (strangely the only male in the class ) at my cookery night class in November 1977 I asked the lecturer if I could listen to the Italy v England World Cup qualifying match during class on the radio I had brought with me. Permission denied. Cue even stroppier teenager and burnt cakes.
