According to research carried out by specialist wine bottler Cobevco, UK consumers prefer red wine over white, rosé and sparkling, and would rather drink it at home than at the pub or in a restaurant.
The study, which saw 2,000 people from a range of age groups quizzed about their drinking habits, also found that despite the recent rise in popularity of sparkling wines, the category ranked fourth after red (37%), white (36%) and rosé (20%), with just 6% of respondents opting for fizz, and 1% opting for low-alcohol wines.
The report also revealed that 75% of respondents prefer to drink wine at home and were most likely to have their first glass of the week at around 7pm on a Wednesday.
Despite the average consumption of respondents being just three and a half glasses of wine a week, more than one in ten said they were concerned they drank too much.
When asked about who they preferred to share a glass of wine with, 55% of women chose their partner, while 25% of men prefer to enjoy a glass of wine alone.
Gillian Walters, sales and marketing director at Cobevco, said: "These results give us a great insight into the nation's drinking habits. As our working week becomes longer and stress takes its toll, people are turning to wine as a midweek treat and a bit of an escape - whether from office life or their family!
"As widely predicted, more are foregoing an evening trip to the pub for a beverage or two in the house, as increased alcohol duty takes its effect on affordability, especially in the on-trade."
