Barefoot Wines clean-up campaign extended to protect Lake and Peak District

Published:  04 July, 2013

Barefoot Friendly, the environmental campaign launched by Barefoot Wine in 2008 to try and help clean up Britain's beaches, has now been extended to do the same with the country's major lake regions.

The initiative is linking up with the Respect the Mountains organisation to help protect the Lake District, the Peak District and other beauty areas across Europe this summer.

The first two mountain clean-ups took place in the Hope Valley area of the Peak District and around Derwent Water in Keswick in the Lake District, where up to 80 volunteers collected more than 50 bags of rubbish.

The mountain clean-ups are running in conjunction with the beach campaign through to September.

During the six years of the annual Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue project, initiated by Barefoot's brand owner E&J Gallo, it has enlisted the help of 4,000 volunteers who have cleaned 43 beaches and collected 10 tonnes of rubbish.

Ben Fogle is acting as celebrity ambassador for the campaign and has also worked alongside Barefoot in its partnership with the Surfers Against Sewage charity.

Barefoot Wine marketing manager Yona Ellis said: "The Barefoot ethos is all about strong ties with the environment and engaging with local communities.

"It's fantastic to see the Barefoot ethos expanding in the UK and we're delighted to be partnering with Respect the Mountains."
