A survey by alcohol education charity Drinkaware says that new year's resolutions to drink less are most likely to be broken today.

The poll said 82% of people who planned to cut down on drinking this year expect to fail.

According to the results, spending more time with the family was the least likely resolution anticipated to be broken, with 70% to break a vow to quit smoking.

Getting fit and healthy were people's most popular resolutions, with 63% saying they wanted to improve health and 49% to get fit and lose weight.

The survey polled 1,000 ABC1 adults, 28% of whom admitted to drinking too much, while of those who wanted to cut back, 48% possess "a lack of willpower".

One in three participants blamed "work-related stress" for the inability to keep to resolutions, with 23% put it down to the "lack of success".

Drinkaware chief executive, Chris Sorek said: "Our research shows a real intent to maintain a healthier lifestyle, but the pressures of daily life and a lack of will power are the main excuses for people slipping back into old drinking habits. That's why February is a good time to re-make your resolutions to drink less.

Sorek advised visiting MyDrinkaware.co.uk to check how many calories and units are in drinks, use the unit calculator and drink diary which were created to help people cutting down their alcohol intake.

Established in 2007, Drinkaware works with the alcohol industry, medical profession and government to inform on the effects of alcohol.
