YouGov poll shows rise in popularity of low & no

The Portman Group’s sixth annual survey in partnership with YouGov reveals young people are the biggest consumers of low & no alcohol alternatives, with nearly half (44%) of 18-24-year-olds surveyed considering themselves either occasional or regular drinkers of alcohol alternatives, compared to 31% in 2022.

Analysis: Tougher ad guidelines

For a long time, alcohol’s advertising regulations have been clear. Led by the CAP and BCAP codes for broadcast and non-broadcast media, ASA rulings and the Portman Group’s Code of Conduct, advertising of licensed and age-restricted products in the UK should not incite people to adopt styles of drinking that are unwise, target under 18s or encourage excessive drinking. Ads cannot be portrayed as mood boosting or therapeutic, either – something Brewdog discovered when it tried to market its hard seltzer cans with a wink and a nod to industry watchdogs.

I wonder if you embraced dry January this year. Apparently quite a few of us went ‘semi-dry,’ which sounds as contradictory as being a little bit pregnant. I always thought such things were all or nothing. Apparently it refers to consciously controlling alcohol consumption by drinking on fewer days, or drinking less when we do, or turning to No and Lo products instead of the full fat options. A booze equivalent of the ‘flexitarian’ approach to food perhaps.
