English wine sales increase 120% year-on-year

Published:  30 November, 1999

English wine sales have increased a considerable 120% year-on-year, new Waitrose figures show.

The UK retailer has seen an increasing trend among consumers to purchase domestically grown products with impressive sales of English sparkling wine driving this pattern.

In November alone, Waitrose's English sparkling wine product saw sales jump by 360%.

Online sales continued to be a key forum for the retailer with English wine outselling claret on the website last month.

The Waitrose purchasing team includes 5 Masters of Wine (MW) and there are currently 11 English vineyards on its books.

Justin Howard-Sneyd, Waitrose MW, commented: "It certainly looks as though many of our customers will be toasting Christmas with a glass of English Fizz.

"With the UK's increasingly warm summers and the skills and expertise of English wine makers, English wine has seen a significant improvement in quality. It is also a great choice for customers wanting to try something a little different this Christmas."

The UK's 1,300 vineyards are predominantly located in the south of England and cultivate in the region of 1,000 hectares of vines.
