Spar wine sales up 11% after annual 'Wine Festival'

Published:  19 July, 2011

Spar has announced its core range of wine sales grew by 11% compared to 2010, after its second consecutive Wine Festival promotion.

The promotion, which was rolled out across its 2,100 licensed stores ran from April 28 - June 8 and included discounts of at least 25% across a range of more than 50 French and Australian brand and own label wines.

The retailer confirms sales of promotional wines increased by 38% during the same period, driving sales of Spar branded wines up by 18.5%.

It says five of the ten best selling wines were Spar own label wines; in particular its Australian Shiraz Cabernet, Australian Chardonnay Semillon and Australian Reserve Chardonnay.

Spar's licensed trading director Chris Lewis, said: "We introduced the Wine Festival in 2010 with the aim of increasing wine market share and to encourage shoppers to try Spar wines.

"It was also a great opportunity to establish Spar's reputation as a retailer that sells excellent quality wines at good value, helping to improve consumer price and quality perceptions of the wine range."

The promotion had extensive marketing support including consumer press advertising, POS material, in-store tastings and PR.

Spar also confirms the range of wines that will be on offer in stores over the Christmas period will shortly be unveiled.
