CIRCLE CONDEMNS BEAUJOLAIS FINE

Published:  23 July, 2008

The E350,000 fine imposed by the Court of the Grand Instance of Villefranche-sur-Sane on the Lyon Mag publication has been described as a ludicrous penalty' and a serious attack on press freedom', according to a resolution to be debated by the Circle of Wine Writers (CWW) at its AGM on 17 March. Proposed by Harpers' contributor Jim Budd and seconded by Harpers' editorial director, Tim Atkin MW, the resolution reads: The Circle deplores in the strongest terms the decision of 56 Beaujolais syndicats and four groups of ngociants to take Lyon Mag to court for the critical comments on the general quality of Beaujolais that appeared in the magazine's July/August 2002 edition. This article was both detailed and balanced. The Circle supports Lyon Mag in its fight to survive and to maintain press freedom. The Circle also calls upon the Beaujolais producers to withdraw their ill-advised action.'
