Dow's new port designed to match chocolate

Published:  23 June, 2011

Symington Family Estates is releasing a port especially designed to complement dark chocolate.

It hopes Dow's Nirvana will help reach a new audience.

Euan Mackay, sales director, said the rationale for the new product was that "an awful lot more people like chocolate than like port".

The product is packaged in lavender and brown - to look like a chocolate bar.

To make sure the flavour profiles matched up it worked with Belgium's University of Leuven, carrying out what Mackay described as a "Heston Blumenthal-style" analysis. "It will help reach out to a new audience, and the on-trade. It should become a default option with dessert," he said.

The firm launched Nirvana in the Netherlands last year, and tested it in the UK with Booths before deciding to roll it out across the country.
