UK wine production figures at record high

Published:  04 May, 2011

The UK wine industry has announced production figures for the 2010 harvest are the highest on record.

The substantial increase of 30,346 hectolitres produced, equates to just over 4 million bottles against last year's 3.5 million, and reflects the rise in planting the industry has experienced in the last five years.

Since 2004, vineyard hectarage has increased by nearly 75%, a figure that is likely to understate the true position, as official figures do not account for all the hectarage planted that is as yet not in production

Indications are that sparkling wine has now become the most widely produced wine style - 2009 data shows approximately 50% of total production was intended for sparkling wine.

The figures come as it prepares for its annual trade and press tasting tomorrow, May 5 at at One Great George Street, London SW1, 10.30 - 4.30pm.
