Alsace's 'fresh and fruity' vintage down 22%

Alsace wines have seen a large fall in volumes in the 2010 vintage following problematic weather conditions.

Total production was down almost 22% to 911,950hl after a year described by trade body the CIVA as "complex".

Following a "hard and long" winter, bud break was late and May was "chilly and damp". Ripening was aided by some fine weather in July.

"As harvest approached, various measurements of ripeness confirmed a high concentration of sugars in the grapes, as well as raised levels of acidity," CIVA said.

"However, due to the erratic weather, ripeness was uneven, both in terms of individual varieties and in terms of vineyard parcels across the region."

The professional body said the 2010 wines are "fresh and fruity" which "bodes well for their ageing potential".
