Tesco drinks chief Dan Jago says the supermarket giant is happy to "put our money where our mouth is" by backing a Harpers Wine & Spirit initiative to find the best new drinks idea in the country.

Tesco is offering an initial listing in 100 stores to the winner of the new national venture Innovation in the Nation - a competition being run by Harpers Wine & Spirit, Tesco and specialist design agency Stranger & Stranger.
It will not only offer a listing in Tesco, but will help raise the profile of design and innovation in the drinks industry.

The competition is open to anyone from major drinks companies, individuals in the trade or people from outside the sector.

Stranger & Stranger will work closely with design colleges to encourage entries and promote drinks innovation to the next generation of design students.

The winning entry must be genuinely pioneering, but could be a new drinks concept, or packaging and design idea.
Kevin Shaw, founder and creative director of Stranger & Stranger, will be promoting the initiative in educational talks at design colleges and universities.

Jago said: "At Tesco we are famous for our engagement in and support for innovation. I have been on the record many times as saying the drinks industry is not as naturally inclined towards innovation as it could be.
"In this instance we are putting our money where our mouth is and look forward to seeing the entries."

The winning design or designs will be selected by Dan Jago, Tesco's head of BWS, Stranger & Stranger and Harpers Wine & Spirit
Stranger & Stranger will then look to do the production work to bring the innovation to market.

Tesco's product development team will also get involved in the process at the required stage

The winning design will be announced at the London International Wine Fair in May.

To enter, simply set out your drinks idea in a single page and either post to Harpers at Innovation for the Nation, Harpers Wine & Spirit, Broadfield Park, Crawley, West Sussex RH11 9RT or go to www.iftn.co.uk and upload it there by April 8.
