LE MONT SEC - SOIL ASSOCIATION WINE OF THE YEAR

Published:  23 July, 2008

By Monty Waldin

Domaine Socit Huet's biodynamic 2001 Vouvray Le Mont Sec has been voted the Soil Association's Wine of the Year. It came top in a field of more than 100 red and white wines at the Association's 16th Annual Organic Food Awards. The wines were blind tasted during the Organic and Real Food Festival, which was held near the Soil Association's Bristol headquarters in July. Judges included broadcasters Robert Joseph and Charles Metcalfe, and wine merchants Bill Baker and Raj Soni. The best-performing reds were Louis Lurton's 1999 Chteau Haut-Nouchet from Pessac-Lognan and Penfolds 2001 Clare Valley Red. Huet requires farmers to be as self-sufficient as possible to avoid excess energy use. Other drinks category winners included The Organic Spirits Company's Juniper Green Organic Gin - the world's first organic gin - St Peter's Brewery English Ale and Aspall Suffolk Cyder.
