This weekend the Grenache Symposium attracted 22 countries  at the world's first Grenache held in Southern France on June 5/6.

Two hundred delegates, including 10 Masters of Wine gathered together under one roof at La Verrière in Le Crestet, to shape the future of the grape that is hailed as the world's most widely planted, but an "unsung hero".

Panels consisting of producers, wine writers, merchants and other wine industry experts debated the grape's general image, how to enhance its reputation, its role in the on and off-trade and in international markets.

Other discussions were tailored around what to do about the high alcohol levels of its wines, effective bottle labeling and best methods viticulture and vinification.

After the event a standing ovation was received for organiser, and co-owner of La Verrière, and Chêne Bleu Wines, Nicole Rolet.

Rolet said: "It was excruciatingly hard work to but into place, but the feedback I have received was that it exceeded expectations.

"Now we have to begin to put Grenache on the map. Some of the heavy work has been done, but it no individual or institution can begin to implement it alone, it's the industry that has to work together as a team to make this happen.

"It's an issue relating to all concerned to call Grenache to centre stage and bring it into the spotlight."

The Grenache Symposium was conducted as a non profit event and sponsored by Inter-Rhone, Riedel, Wine Academy of Spain and Harpers Wine & Spirit.
