Great Western Wine has been fined a total £35,000 including costs through the courts for officially failing to recycle its waste packaging.

The Environment Agency confirmed that the Bath based company committed nine offences by failing to comply with its regulations between 2004 - 2008.

Packaging Waste Regulations state that businesses are required to register with the Environment Agency or other recognised compliance schemes if they have an annual turnover of over £2 million and handling more than 50-tonnes of packaging a year.

The scheme is set up to reduce the amount of waste going into landfill.

It was reported that Great Western Wine was fined £3,300 for each of the nine offences and ordered to pay £1,999 costs plus £3,856 compensation by Bath magistrates. The company has now joined a compliance scheme.
