Majestic has enjoyed a bumper festive sales period with a sales jump of nearly 12% in the nine weeks to January 4.

Majestic has enjoyed a bumper festive sales period with a sales jump of nearly 12% in the nine weeks to January 4. Analysts are seeing the results as a consumer vote of confidence for its decision last summer to cut the minimum order from 12 bottles to six bottles.

In a statement Majestic said: "Like-for-like sales were up 11.7% for the nine weeks of Christmas trading from November 3 to January 4."

It added: "We are delighted with the growth in sales over the Christmas period. We are encouraged by our consumers' response to the reduction in our minimum purchase to six bottles. Transaction volumes are up and we have seen a substantial increase in the number of customers trying Majestic for the first time."

The news has also been welcomed in the City for the steps taken by Majestic compensate for the recessionary decline in Champagne sales. Although it has been running some promotions on Champagne it has introduced a number of new premium sparkling lines from major wine producing countries.

It has a long term target to increase its store network from 153 to 250.

* Marks & Spencer has reported a 2.6% increase in sales in the 13 weeks to December 26.
