Foster's EMEA has become the first wine company to join the WRAP Courtauld Commitment.

Foster's EMEA has become the first wine company to join the WRAP Courtauld Commitment.

The protocol commits signatories to reduce the amount of packaging thrown away each year to help the UK hit its EU landfill targets and contribute to resource efficiency in the retail, food and drinks manufacturing sectors.

As part of its commitment, Foster's has expanded its bulk shipping of wine and bottling in the UK, to reduce carbon emissions by 55%.

It is also using rail freight to cut its carbon footprint.

Supply chain director Rob Hollis said: "We are now collaborating with other signatories to help achieve 2010 packaging targets, as well as developing future strategies.

"Reducing carbon emissions is a global priority for Foster's. We're looking forward to seeing more UK wine suppliers getting on board."

Foster's EMEA is the European, Middle East and African division of the Foster's Group.
